Shock Mount Rack Cases
Shock-mounted racks are designed to isolate vibration from delicate equipment. The standard configuration is to surround a wood outer case with 2” polyurethane and polyethylene foam, however, this can be reduced to 1” to save space in studios and trucks. Shock mount racks are necessary for computer equipment, delicate audio, and broadcast gear, and anything rack-mounted that cannot withstand vibration.
Shock-mounted rack cases are the same configuration as racks with a front and rear lid and rack rail placed on the left and right of the lid opening and running from top to bottom but they have an inner wood shell or metal frame shock-mounted in one of several ways: the most common are foam or lord mounts. Options include rear rack rail and casters. The depth of the rack varies depending on the equipment requirements. Jan-Al Cases builds its racks to EIA standards. Jan-Al Cases has been deeply committed to reducing our environmental footprint by using water based coatings, green construction products & examining manufacturing capture of the products we use in our cases. We encourage our customers to be climate kind.
Standards:
- 18-22” Rail-to-rail depth
- 22+” Extra Depth
- ¼”, 3/8”, or ½” Plywood depending on rack size and payload
Options:
- Rear Rail pre-drilled & tapped 10-32
- Square rail with cage nuts
- Z-Rail available both square rail & pre-drilled & tapped 10-32
- Casters (see Hardware & Accessories)
- Foam size and type
Short Shock Mount Racks
A short rack is the same as a standard rack but limited to under 14”. They often have front rail only with telescoping handles and edge casters.
Standards:
- Maximum 14” rail-to-rail depth
- 1/4, 3/8” plywood
Options:
- Rear Rail pre-drilled & tapped 10-32
- Square rail with cage nuts
- Tilt & roll casters with telescoping handle and bumpers (see Hardware & Accessories)
Pull Over Racks (POC)
The pull over rack is a shock mount rack composed of a shell inside of a B-Style case. This type of rack mounting is ideal for environments where the rack will only rarely travel and the top lid can be used as a pedestal to elevate the equipment or the user wants to tilt the rack for visibility.
Standards:
- 18-22” Rail-to-rail depth
- 22+” Extra Depth
- ¼”, 3/8”, or ½” Plywood depending on rack size and payload
Options:
- Rear Rail pre-drilled & tapped 10-32
- Square rail with cage nuts
- Z-Rail available both square rail & pre-drilled & tapped 10-32
- Casters (see Hardware & Accessories)

POCKET RACKS & SLAM RACKS & KRAVITZ RACKS
Three styles of shock mounting
Pocket and slam racks are another type of shock mount rack. These are shock mounted using lord mounts a/k/a cylindrical rubber mounts. The mounts are set at the top & bottom of the inner rack which can be a steel frame or wooden shell. The lids are either mounted on sliders or slip into the pocket on the left and right sides between the outer case and inner rack. NOTE: on most racks, the lids will protrude on one side depending on the construction selected.
Kravitz Racks are totally foam enclosed with a flat panel lid. These are extremely heavy racks, made entirely of ½” birch. They cannot be modified once they are assembled. They are extremely tough and durable.
Standards:
- 18-22” Rail-to-rail depth
- 22+” Extra Depth
- ½” Plywood depending
Options:
- Rear Rail pre-drilled & tapped 10-32
- Square rail with cage nuts
- Casters (see Hardware & Accessories)
